Protect Your Candy Haul: Tips to Prevent Pests This Halloween

Halloween is a magical time for children—a night of costumes, laughter, and of course, collecting as much candy as their bags can hold. But while your kids are reveling in their sweet success, there may be other, less welcome guests eyeing that sugary stash. Pests like mice, ants, and roaches are just as eager to indulge in the Halloween haul, especially as they seek warmth and food with winter approaching. To protect your home and keep those treats safe, here are some effective strategies to ensure the candy doesn’t attract unwanted critters.

Secure Candy in Pest-Proof Containers

Not only can keeping Halloween candy in a metal, glass, or thick plastic container with a secure lid keep young children from overindulging in sugary treats, but it can also keep pests out.  Pests will be unable to chew through the thick container and are less likely to be attracted by the smell of candy.

Refrigerate Treats to Deter Unwanted Guests

Refrigerating the candy can also be a great option. Most refrigerators seal well by design, which keeps cold air in and pests out. Refrigeration can also help keep candy from melting and leaking outside of the wrapper, which makes a sticky mess that mice, ants, and roaches can’t resist. As an added bonus, a chilled candy bar is an especially tasty treat.

Don’t Leave the Wrappers

Keeping up with picking up candy wrappers can be daunting if you have young children, but it’s well worth the effort. Candy wrappers can attract pests by giving visual and scent cues that there is food nearby. Make sure all wrappers are disposed of, and trash is taken out regularly.

Bring Leftover Candy Indoors After Trick-or-Treating

When the last of the trick-or-treaters stops by your house, make sure you bring that candy bowl inside. Any leftovers can attract pests like ants, wasps, mice, and raccoons.

Share Excess Candy to Reduce Pest Temptations

This may not be the most popular option with the kids, but candy can’t attract pests to your home if it’s not there to begin with.  Have your kids bring candy to school to share with friends and classmates or bring the candy to the office to distribute amongst your coworkers.  The longer stored candy hangs around, the more likely it is to attract unwanted guests.

By taking these simple yet effective precautions, you can enjoy the delights of the Halloween season without the tricks pests can bring. Not only will you safeguard your home from infestations, but you’ll also ensure your family’s health and peace of mind. So, as your kids savor their hard-earned treats, you’ll rest easy knowing you’ve kept the real monsters at bay. Here’s to a happy, pest-free Halloween!
