Four commonly found rodents in New England are house mice, deer mice, Norway rats, and roof rats. Even if you only see a mouse or two, there’s almost certainly a colony nearby, and they can reproduce quite rapidly. Mice become sexually mature when only five to eight weeks old with one single mouse typically reproducing up to eight times with litters of four to seven pups on average. Rats are bigger than mice with the shaggy brown Norway rat being 7 ½ to 9 ½ inches long with small eyes and ears. The gray to black roof rat is typically six to eight inches in length with the tail adding another seven to ten inches. Ears and eyes are large.
